Maeloc Spanish J70 Championship

Awarded to A Coruña, the Spanish J70 Championship, the internationally fashionable one-design class. On the World Calendar, it coincides with the Spanish Nationals, the United States Championship in Annapolis, the French Championship and the Nordic-Baltic countries’ Championship, with the objective of qualifying for the World Championship at YC California in the United States.

A large part of the best skippers from Spain and Portugal will be on the starting line from 14 to 16 May.

Crews from Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Castilla-León, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Region of Murcia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Andalusia… as well as Portugal, will compete in A Coruña waters.

The organisation is in charge of Marina Coruña, the J70 Class and the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña.

The northern and southern Galician fleets will face a tough test against the strength of the J70 fleets from Cantabria, Catalonia and the Canary Islands.

THE MAELOC SPANISH J70 CHAMPIONSHIP FROM 14 TO 16 MAY IN A CORUÑA WILL DECIDE THE SPANISH REPRESENTATION AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE UNITED STATES

It is now official: the Maeloc Spanish J70 Championship will take place in the waters of A Coruña Bay, organised by Marina Coruña and the Real Club Náutico, between 14 and 16 May. The Vigo fleet of the class, which is the internationally fashionable high-performance one-design class, was a decisive factor for A Coruña to be chosen at the national class assembly… the decision has been made to involve the city of A Coruña, as it is considered essential for the development of the class at a national level.

Another essential factor in making this decision was that one of the best ocean racing skippers in Spanish sailing history, as is Chuny Bermúdez de Castro, is professionally linked to Marina Coruña and personally committed himself to ensuring the highest technical quality of the Spanish Championship.

The best J70 boats from Spain and Portugal have already confirmed their participation with their top-level crews, including teams from Galicia with skippers from the four Galician provinces… from Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Madrid, Castilla-León, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, the Region of Murcia, Andalusia or the Canary Islands… as well as Portugal, which will have its most successful helmsmen on the starting line.

The elite of the Spanish-Portuguese J70 fleet is leaving its usual venues: Vigo or Barcelona, to compete with all available equipment at the foot of the Tower of Hercules. The Nationals are scheduled to start on Friday 14 May at three o’clock in the afternoon, with a very long day on Saturday starting at around half past eleven in the morning, and on Sunday beginning one hour earlier, with the aim of having everything decided by two o’clock in the afternoon and then holding the closing ceremony at the Marina Coruña facilities.

There is great excitement among the participants, who have unanimously supported the experience of competing with these one-design boats in A Coruña, as the bay’s excellent conditions in terms of wind and sea are highly valued, offering a great setting for this type of competition.

Coinciding with the dates of the Maeloc Spanish Championship, other events will also be held, such as the United States Championship in Annapolis, the French Championship or the Nordic and Baltic countries’ Championship. The objective, as with the A Coruña event, is to obtain qualification for the European Championship held in Denmark and the World Championship organised by the California Yacht Club in the United States.
